Battle of the Bay: Newport Harbor vs. Corona del Mar

Saturday, October 12, 2025 – 7:30 p.m. at Orange Coast College

It’s that time again in Newport Beach — when familiar faces line up on opposite sidelines and bragging rights for an entire year hang in the balance. The Battle of the Bay returns Saturday night as the Newport Harbor Sailors face off against the Corona del Mar Sea Kings in one of Orange County’s most storied rivalries.

For senior quarterback Jake Meer, this matchup is deeply personal. “We’ve been competing against CdM guys since we were in second grade,” he said. From flag football to the Friday night lights, that friendly rivalry now plays out in front of thousands.

Newport Harbor enters the contest 2–4 (0–1 Bravo League), but their record doesn’t tell the full story — all four losses have come by a touchdown or less, including last week’s narrow 17–14 setback at Tesoro. The Sailors’ offense, led by Meer, continues to spread the ball effectively to Shane McKibbin, Jackson Stremick, and Ryan Palmer, while Glenn Baranoski — now committed to the University of San Diego — anchors the defense and provides veteran leadership.

On the other side, Corona del Mar (6–0, 1–0) looks sharp after a commanding 33–10 win over San Juan Hills, powered by quarterback Brady Annett and a dynamic receiving trio — JJ Haley, Dorsett Stecker, and Garrett James — who have combined for more than 1,300 yards and 22 touchdowns this season.

CdM head coach Kevin Hettig summed it up best: “The energy and the feel with this game are different than any other. It comes down to who plays harder.”

Newport Harbor has won the last two meetings, snapping CdM’s previous 10-game streak. The Sailors lead the all-time series 40–23, and if history is any indication, expect another hard-fought, emotional showdown when these cross-town rivals meet under the lights.

Kickoff: 7:30 p.m.
Location: Orange Coast College
Atmosphere: Electric. Emotional. Everything Newport Beach football is about.
